Dear David, a series of letters to a longtime friend in March 2008

March 2008

Dear David,

Yes, we know that is later than usual, but March is a busy time of year that all the planting and the start of loan renovation of the tourist season.

Fortunately, the weather improved during the last month and my nectarine tree, which usually blooms in early February, the almond, is now in full bloom, only hope that this year there are no winds from the south of overheating in the flowering and fruiting stop. Potatoes are planted to tomatoes George on track despite the cold weather that delayed a few days, and I have planted my own garden ready for harvest was principal. I have my usual spinach GLUT year now that the weather is warmer, and also have a good crop of rocket and other salad leaves! Celery has been somewhat a failure as it has been in the field too long and began to live, but now I know I have to plant the seeds at the end of the year and always ready for winter.

Now, when I wrote about my visit to Kato Zakros and Vai beach last time, that does not mean I will start a series of reviews on the beaches of Crete! But since you asked me and I had time to do it, I made a trip to the south island of Matala, one of the other famous (or should I say infamous beaches!) On the island. From my Hersonissos house is about two hours by car after leaving the main road in the back of Heraklion, the road passes through several villages on the way attractions of the big city (not to go on Saturday is market day and the traffic is horrible), and how an ancient Roman city of Gortys, well worth a stop. You really can spend several hours alone in a site, if you are really interested in archeology.

After leaving there attractions two more sites in Agia Triada and, of course, Festo, the label "famous" can be seen in the museum of Heraklion, and countless ceramic reproductions and metal! Festo is so important if someone comes here, so I recommend you stop for a while. The site is not large and, unlike Knossos is fairly flat for all people with disabilities the opportunity to move (not the same as Malia), Festo is also admirably situated at the end of a high cliff overlooking the fields more about.

Not much farther down some winding roads and come to Matala. You spend a few blocks from the apartments and so on, on the road and then click on the town and the beach. The town is small and classification of grip on the rocks at the end of the black sand beach, what about when I started to miss the point about all those of Matala. The town is pedestrian, but at this time of year, the barriers were closed and that it was possible to drive through it and again. In the village a few bars, taverns and souvenir shops, everything you expect in fact, more than ample parking in the back of the beach.

The beach itself is not very big, so I was expecting a vast expanse of golden sand, but this is not what is really Matala, and I suppose you may have guessed, when I saw two backpackers in sandals of Jesus ( March?) position in the village. One somehow I was disappointed, as was my traveling companion who has lived in Crete for many years but has never been Matala. If doubt about these things, of course, ask another person what they think. In this case, I talked to someone many years younger than me, and certainly has not been alive in the 70s! The next part is about a ….. Verbatim quote

"You will not Matala to sit on the beach, go to Matala to live spirit of 60 years, the soul of the hippies, and absorb the atmosphere of a place where Joni Mitchell and Jimi Hendrix huddled in caves.

Matala in the years 60s and early 70s was home to a large colony of hippies living in the caves of Minoan (which have since been used by the Romans as tombs), until finally were expelled by the police. Joni Mitchell then visited and stayed there (although I find no reference Jimi Hendrix), and their song "Carey was inspired time, although it seems to be some confusion with dates I can not suppress the atmosphere a little "heady" in the moment. Since I found a couple of people (not Greek), who lived at the time, and your opinion is the same. Matala is a place where the spirit of freedom and new ones were found valid. Pity we never went there! And today, Matala is still on the hippie trail, and I really think back when it is open and stay a night or two. If the size parking in comparison to the size of the village is anything to go by, should be very uprising during peak hours!

Right next to Matala and accessible a path to the right of the entrance is another beach Matala Kommos. Minoan is a small place here, but the parking lot some a little more not much more than the beach! Being in a side street, I do not think gets busy and there are plenty of beaches for everyone because it is really a sand shot to the left (I said the gay community at the end of the nudist beach is located next to the rock formation that separates the Matala). Minoan site In The beach stretches to the village of Kalamaki, where I said I was a fighter German on the beach. Or, my eyesight is worse than anyone thought, or won out because I did not see.

And anyway it was noon and as there was open somewhere I stopped and had the best home beefburger I think I've had in a tavern near the beach of Kalamaki Athinavoles call.

After lunch, usually we went quietly at home, and take a wrong turn, ended up in a small village called Rouse. Sometimes it's amazing what you find by accident, and found Rouse a store called "botanical", which sells a wide range of herbs and teas!

I think this is going to be for many excursions to the rest of the summer, so not asking for comments until the fall beach!

Now, as you are ready for Easter, here in Greece are about to be rendered, which means it's time for carnival, with parades and music and costumes, which the tourists never see, especially when an early Easter and the carnival is in February! The shops are full of Superman and Spiderman costumes for children and hope there are French maids, archbishops, witches and cowboys, too. In Eros in Malia, our self-proclaimed openly and only gay bar in Crete, the drag is of course the agenda. I put some pictures on the site for you. Can real Amy Winehouse please yourself!

During Lent is taken seriously here, at least not by me, vegetarian and being almost as you know, I have been known by chewing the piece of meat is used and enjoy it, if at that time, I tend to buy in food and why I usually put about 5 pounds now and then until August to lose again. Thank God for wide-shirts!

Well, of course, with the "season" that threat is a time to meet with friends before disappearing everyone working for the summer and not see each other until October, and what better way to do around a table full of food! Sometimes, however, is good eating out if not, to avoid the dishes, while Wenders and I went to try a new place Meze which opened during the winter. This may seem a good time to open a restaurant, but it is quite normal here. In fact, visitors often ask where the winter you can eat, and if you live here, know places located in the corners.

It's not often tell me I have to write about food, as I'm usually too busy I'll put on my neck, but this time I have to say something! "His Filarakia "(meaning" friends "as in the television series) appears in my webcam and so far had not been there, and I was impressed! It is located on a side street to the road by the main port and is located opposite the office of OTA, while the visitor was, that is not in the main street unless your building nearby.

Since many of these places, the mother is at the forefront in the kitchen and the style is described as "rustic." Guess The front bar looks a bit like a fence! This is not a big place with about nine tables and the same stars. If we light a fire table is lost, unless the grid customer service in the evening. The chief was a little worried about us not read the menu because it's probably only in Greek, which was not really a problem, one of the first things you learn is always food otherwise starve to death! No, the main problem was a small fountain in a tawny brown and not very bright lights! Although age has its own virtues, read the fine print is not one of them.

Avoid the usual salad and Greek tzatziki, a tribute to healthy eating by ordering Horta, (actually spinach, but what is really the difference?), Then we went in healthy foods, saganaki, feta from the oven, bacon, Kalamar, peppers (Green light on those long, almost ordered them stuffed with cheese, but decided two batches of cheese were not enough), and the liver is the Greek way, lightly breaded and fried, then dust (or made into a hot oven) with a little rosemary. To flash the cooked liver, cut into bite-sized, so it is almost crispy on the outside, but still pink inside so tender and melts in the mouth is a real challenge! After what seemed like hours to eat there was still enough to make bacon at home a bit of fun for the dog, and certainly no room for dessert, although I have not noticed this cake sprinkled with honey and syrup, and spoon is sweet! Maybe I should not have three pieces of bread to clean the juices from the liver and peppers, or maybe I was the first paximathia. Better yet the bill was only € 27.50 for two us, without the wine! A € 5.50 bacon is more expensive than we had.

So I wrote to a friend of Elounda has called to ask if I wanted drive a couple of his friends in England about a couple of days, so you can get another travelogue next month, and I'm sitting here is my connection ADSL on and off, and it is not even the wind blows from the south.

And yes, I will include some Easter next time I write, but have to wait until later this month that Easter is not until the last end week of April.

Yours, as always
