New York Cruises

Do you need a passport to leave from New York City to the Bahamas?
Since my kids are getting out for February break, we saved our pennies and would like to know if we could take a family cruise from New York City (we live in Queens) to the Caribbean. Would we need a passport because what I heard is technically you don’t unless somehow the ship sunk, but you couldn’t be brought back, is this true? Please help, Thanks a ton!
